Congenital malformations in twins: effect of chorionicity and zygosity.

چکیده
We conducted this study to determine the pattern of congenital malformations in twins born in our hospital over a 9 month period (January to September 2006). Gross congenital anomalies were recorded within 6 hours of birth by detailed clinical examination in all successively delivered ≥23 weeks twin babies, whether stillborn or live-born. Radiological and autopsy examinations were carried out as and where indicated. All live twin babies stayed for 7 days in the NICU/ postnatal ward/ lyingin ward as per the unit protocols. They were examined daily and observed carefully for any fresh signs/symptoms. Zygosity was determined with the help of sex, placental chorionicity and 7 blood group phenotypes(7).

Does chorionicity or zygosity predict adverse perinatal outcomes in twins?
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate chorionicity and zygosity as risk factors for adverse perinatal outcomes in twins. STUDY DESIGN A population-based, retrospective cohort study was conducted of all twin deliveries in Nova Scotia, Canada, from 1988 to 1997. Chorionicity was established by histologic examination. Zygosity was determined by chorionicity, sex, and infant blood g...
متن کاملThe frequency and clinical significance of twin gestations according to zygosity and chorionicity.
BACKGROUND Although the clinical importance of chorionicity in twin pregnancies has been studied widely, the significance of perinatal determination of zygosity using molecular genetic analyses remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and clinical significance of twin gestations according to zygosity and chorionicity in a Korean population. METHODS We en...
متن کاملCongenital anomalies in twins in Aberdeen and Northeast Scotland.
Data with regard to the proportion of congenital malformations found at birth are presented from a survey of 657 pairs of twins of known zygosity and placentation delivered in Aberdeen and Northeast Scotland between 1968 and 1979. There was an excess of malformed individuals from monozygotic (MZ) pairs, but this did not reach statistical significance. The possible effect of monochorionic placen...
متن کاملEffects of chorionicity and zygosity on triplet birth weight.
Birth weight in triplets is, on average, lower than in singletons and twins, and more children are classified as having very low or extremely low birth weight. Still, there is limited research on factors that affect triplet birth weight, and samples under study are often small. Chorionicity and zygosity influence triplet birth weight, but it is unknown whether the effect of zygosity can be enti...
متن کاملBCG reaction in twin newborns: effect of zygosity and chorionicity.
OBJECTIVE To study local response to BCG vaccination in twin babies and find out the effect of zygosity andchorionicity on BCG uptake. DESIGN Analytical observational study. SETTING Tertiary hospital. METHODS Twin pairs born in the hospital were evaluated for zygosity and chorionicity. BCG vaccination was given within 48 hours of birth to babies >/=33 weeks of gestation and birth weight >...
